Committed To Our Community
As the only candidate who lives and works in our ward I see the changes and challenges faced by the continued growth of our town every day. I believe this gives me a better perspective on our community needs. I will be a strong advocate for Ridgeway, Thunder Bay, Oakhill Forest and the surrounding areas. The Town of Fort Erie’s Strategic Plan includes the statement: “A community .... that manages growth responsibly and recognizes existing neighbourhoods by implementing effective planning and policies.” The Town has done a good job on some of the streets surrounding new developments but there are still many areas that need to be addressed.
Safe, welcoming neighbourhoods.
Our thoroughfares have seen a large increase in traffic over the years. Gorham Road handles a large amount of traffic flowing into Wards 4 & 5. With further commercial and residential development in the works, things will only get worse. Gorham Road has become dangerous for vehicles and pedestrians. One of my top priorities will be addressing improvements needed sooner rather than later. Burleigh Road is also due for assessment. Improvements have been made on Thunder Bay Road, but I can foresee the need to add other east–west routes to the list.
A connected community
I often joke with people about the sidewalks that ‘lead to nowhere’ in Ridgeway. We have had a grocery store for close to 40 years that can’t be walked to safely. I don’t expect to be able to get a sidewalk on every side street, but existing sidewalk infrastructure should at least be patched together to complete a grid that is practical for pedestrians.
We have unfortunately become used to seeing example like this. New development along Dominion Road gets sidewalks. New development on Prospect Point gets new poured curbs and sidewalks. Both end abruptly because the Town couldn’t be bothered putting 50 feet of sidewalk across the pre-existing housing.
Urgent Care
We have raised 3 children. I have broken multiple bones. My wife has survived a brain tumor and still suffers from occasional debilitating migraines. We have seen the inside of the Urgent Care a lot over the last 25 years. I firmly believe Fort Erie should have a 24 hour Urgent Care facility with access to basic scanning technology and blood labs. I don’t believe Douglas Memorial is the long term solution. It is a 90 year old building that is too large, antiquated and expensive to maintain for what is needed to host a modern Urgent Care. Other solutions should be sought out and considered, I have been to many other communities where they have all of these services provided in a more modern facility with a smaller footprint.
